The UK Solar Installation Process
Step 1: Get Multiple Quotes
Always get at least 3 quotes from MCS-certified installers. Look for:
- MCS certification (required for SEG payments)
- RECC or TrustMark membership
- Good reviews and testimonials
Step 2: Site Survey
The installer will assess:
- Roof orientation and angle
- Shading analysis
- Structural suitability
- Electrical infrastructure
Step 3: Planning Permission
Most UK installations don't require planning permission under permitted development rights. Exceptions include:
- Listed buildings
- Conservation areas
- Panels that protrude more than 200mm
Step 4: Installation Day
Installation typically takes 1-2 days:
- Morning: Scaffolding setup, mounting rails installed
- Afternoon: Panels mounted, wiring completed
- Day 2: Inverter installation, final connections
Step 5: Grid Connection
Your installer will notify your DNO (Distribution Network Operator). This is usually automatic for systems under 3.68kW.
Step 6: Register for SEG
Once installed, register with an energy supplier's Smart Export Guarantee to get paid for exported electricity.
