Question 1

How does solar work in the UK climate?

Accepted Answer

Solar panels work effectively in the UK even on cloudy days. Modern panels are designed to capture diffuse light, not just direct sunlight. The UK receives about 60% of the solar radiation that the south of Spain receives, which is still plenty for efficient solar generation.

Question 2

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

Accepted Answer

The Smart Export Guarantee is a UK government scheme that requires energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers to offer payment for excess solar electricity exported to the grid. Rates typically range from 4-15p per kWh depending on the supplier.

Question 3

Is there VAT on solar panels in the UK?

Accepted Answer

No, residential solar panel installations are zero-rated for VAT in the UK, meaning you pay 0% VAT. This applies to the panels, batteries, and installation costs for domestic properties.

Question 4

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Accepted Answer

Most solar panel installations in England, Scotland, and Wales fall under permitted development rights and don't require planning permission. However, you may need permission if you live in a listed building, conservation area, or if panels would protrude more than 200mm from the roof.

Question 5

What is MCS certification and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is a quality assurance scheme for renewable energy installations. Using an MCS-certified installer is essential because it's required to receive Smart Export Guarantee payments and provides consumer protection.

Question 6

What size solar system do I need for my UK home?

Accepted Answer

The average UK home uses about 3,500kWh per year. A 4kW system (10-12 panels) typically generates 3,400-3,800kWh annually, covering most household needs. Larger homes or those with electric vehicles may benefit from 5-6kW systems.

Question 7

How much do solar panels cost in the UK?

Accepted Answer

In the UK, solar panel systems typically cost between GBP 5,000-10,000 for a standard 3-4kW residential installation. Here's a breakdown by system size:

- 3kW system (8-10 panels): GBP 5,000-6,500
- 4kW system (10-12 panels): GBP 6,500-8,000
- 5kW system (12-14 panels): GBP 8,000-10,000
- 6kW+ systems: GBP 10,000-15,000

Since April 2022, residential solar installations are VAT-free (0% VAT), reducing costs significantly. Battery storage adds GBP 2,500-6,000 depending on capacity. Premium brands cost more but offer better warranties and efficiency. Always get at least 3 quotes from MCS-certified installers to ensure competitive pricing.

Question 8

What is the payback period for solar panels in the UK?

Accepted Answer

The payback period for solar panels in the UK is typically **8-12 years** in 2025-2026, improving as electricity prices remain elevated.

**Factors that speed up payback:**

Question 9

How long does solar panel installation take in the UK?

Accepted Answer

The physical installation of solar panels in the UK typically takes just 1-2 days for a standard residential system. However, the complete process from enquiry to operational system takes 4-8 weeks:

**Timeline breakdown:**
1. **Initial survey** (Week 1): Installer visits to assess roof, shading, and electrical setup
2. **Quote and design** (Week 1-2): Detailed proposal with system design
3. **Paperwork** (Week 2-3): DNO notification, scaffolding booking, permits if needed
4. **Installation** (Week 4-5): 1-2 days for the actual work
5. **DNO connection** (Week 5-8): Meter installation and grid connection approval
6. **SEG registration** (Week 6-8): Register for Smart Export Guarantee payments

**What happens during installation day:**
- Scaffolding erected (if not done prior)
- Mounting rails fixed to roof
- Panels installed and wired

Question 10

What documents do I need for a UK solar installation?

Accepted Answer

For a solar panel installation in the UK, you'll need the following documents:

**Documents you provide:**
1. Proof of property ownership or landlord permission (if renting)
2. Recent electricity bill showing your MPAN number
3. Photo ID for warranty registration
4. Access to your consumer unit (fuse box) location

**Documents your installer handles:**
1. **DNO notification** (G98/G99): Required before connecting to the grid. Your installer submits this to your Distribution Network Operator (Western Power, UK Power Networks, etc.)
2. **MCS certificate**: Essential for SEG payments - proves the system meets quality standards
3. **Electrical safety certificate**: Part P compliance documentation
4. **Warranty documents**: Panel, inverter, and workmanship warranties
5. **Handover pack**: System manual, performance data, and maintenance guidelines

**Planning permission** (if required):
- Most installations don't need planning permission under "permitted development"
- Required for listed buildings, conservation areas, or if panels protrude significantly
- Your installer can advise on your specific situation

Always ensure your installer provides all MCS documentation - without it, you cannot register for SEG payments.

Question 11

Do I need batteries with my solar system in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Batteries are optional but increasingly valuable for UK solar systems, especially with quality **hybrid inverters** that make future battery additions seamless.

**When batteries ARE worth it:**

1. **Evening/weekend usage patterns** - You're not home during peak solar hours
2. **Time-of-use tariffs** - Octopus Agile, Intelligent Go, or similar variable rate plans
3. **Backup power needs** - Keep essentials running during outages
4. **High electricity rates** - Currently 28p+/kWh makes self-consumption valuable
5. **Low SEG rates** - If your export rate is under 5p/kWh, storing makes more sense

**Why install a Hybrid Inverter (even without batteries now):**

The smartest decision for many UK homeowners is installing a **hybrid inverter** from day one:
- **Future-proof**: Add batteries when prices drop further (expected 20-30% decrease by 2027)
- **No retrofit costs**: Batteries connect directly, no inverter replacement
- **Better monitoring**: Track consumption patterns to optimize future battery sizing
- **Minimal extra cost**: Only £200-400 more than a standard string inverter

**Battery system costs (2025-2026):**
- 5kWh system: £2,500-3,500
- 10kWh system: £4,500-6,000
- 13.5kWh (Tesla Powerwall 2): £8,000-10,000

**Recommended approach:**
1. Install hybrid inverter (Fronius, SMA, SolarEdge - all offer 10-year warranties)
2. Monitor your export vs consumption for 6-12 months
3. Add appropriately sized battery when ready

**For time-of-use tariff users:**
Batteries enable buying cheap overnight electricity (5-7p/kWh) and using it during peak times (35p+/kWh) - this alone can justify battery investment.

Question 12

Do solar panels work in British winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, solar panels work throughout British winters, though at reduced output. Here's what to expect:

**Winter performance (November-February):**
- Panels produce 15-25% of annual output during these 4 months
- Shortest days mean less generation time (7-8 hours of daylight vs 16 in summer)
- Lower sun angle reduces efficiency
- However, panels actually perform BETTER in cold temperatures

**Why production is lower but not zero:**
- Panels work on light, not heat - they generate even on overcast days
- Diffuse light still produces 10-25% of rated output
- Snow rarely sticks to angled panels (melts or slides off)
- Clear winter days can produce well due to cooler panel temperatures

**Annual balance:**
A typical 4kW UK system produces:
- Summer (Jun-Aug): ~1,200 kWh (35% of annual)
- Spring/Autumn: ~1,600 kWh (47% of annual)
- Winter (Nov-Feb): ~600 kWh (18% of annual)
- Total: ~3,400 kWh/year

**Tips for winter:**
- Keep panels clear of debris and leaves
- A battery helps store limited winter production
- Adjust electricity usage to midday when production peaks
- Don't worry - summer overproduction compensates for winter shortfall

Question 13

How do I compare different solar panel offers?

Accepted Answer

When comparing solar offers, evaluate these key factors:

**1. Price per watt** (total cost divided by system capacity) - typically ranges from €0.80-1.50/W depending on region.

**2. Panel quality and durability:**
- Look for **dual-glass (glass-glass) panels** - these are significantly more durable than glass-backsheet panels, with better resistance to weather, humidity, and potential-induced degradation
- Premium panels typically offer **25-30 year warranties** with better degradation rates (0.4-0.5% per year vs 0.6-0.8%)
- Efficiency ratings of 20-22% are excellent for modern panels

**3. Inverter quality and warranty:**
- Premium inverter brands: **Fronius, SMA, SolarEdge** - known for reliability and excellent monitoring
- Standard warranties are typically **10 years**, with options to extend to 15-25 years
- **Hybrid inverters** are recommended if you plan to add batteries - they support both grid-tie and battery storage, saving significant upgrade costs later

**4. Installation quality:**
- Certified installers with proven track records
- Quality mounting systems appropriate for your roof type
- Proper cable management and waterproofing

**5. Monitoring and service:**
- Real-time production monitoring app
- Warranty terms and response times
- Local support availability

Question 14

What happens if my solar panels are damaged?

Accepted Answer

If your solar panels are damaged, here is what to do:

1. Document the damage with photos for insurance claims.
2. Contact your installer — most systems include 10–25 year product warranties covering manufacturing defects.
3. Check your home insurance policy, which typically covers weather damage, falling objects, and accidents.
4. **Do not attempt repairs yourself — solar systems involve high voltage.**
5. A qualified technician can assess whether individual panels need replacement or the entire system requires attention.

Most damage is cosmetic and does not affect production significantly.

Question 15

How long do solar panels last?

Accepted Answer

Modern solar panels typically last 25-30 years or more. Most manufacturers provide 25-year performance warranties guaranteeing at least 80-85% of original output. Panels don't stop working after 25 years - they continue producing electricity at gradually reduced efficiency (typically 0.5-0.8% degradation per year). Quality inverters last 10-15 years and may need replacement once during the panel lifespan. With proper installation and minimal maintenance, your solar investment provides clean energy for decades.
